Birders, Hikers Get Close to Nature at North Central PA’s Montour Preserve

Here in the Bloomsburg area of Pennsylvania, PPL Utilities
is not just supplying power to those within its reach, but opportunities to get out
and enjoy nature too.
Years ago, as a backup water source, PPL Utilities created
the Lake Chillisquaque Reservoir and the surrounding preserve. Montour Preserve with Lake Chillisquaque at
its center, has become a year-round favorite of those who stay at the Inn,
Farmhouse and Brewing Co at Turkey Hill. It’s just a short drive up PA-44 to
get to the preserve, which is a delightful outing no matter the season.

Appalachian Valley, the 966-acre

Start your visit to the Preserve with a stop at its Montour
Environmental Center for information and brochures. Then it’s time to explore
the Preserve’s wildlife ponds, meadows, riparian-valley woods and fossil pit.
Five specific hikes incorporate many of the Preserve’s trails, spotlighting its
cultural and natural history. The Montour Preserve naturalist does offer guided
walks at different times during the year, so be sure to check the website or
call for information.
Because of its wealth of seasonal birds, waterfowl and
raptors, the area is a drawing card for birders who take to the Preserve with
binoculars. A treat for all is coming at the end of March, the peak of waterfowl
migration—a
wonderful thing to see! However, each season offers lots of bird viewing
possibilities as the Preserve boasts a total of 230 different bird species
observed there over 30 years.

The Montour Preserve is a gem in an area of Pennsylvania
that is blessed with beauty. We think the grounds surrounding The Inn at Turkey Hill—complete
with a pond and ducks—are too! If you enjoy being in nature, but love all the
comforts of home, give us call. We’d love to have you stay with us.
