One is the International Harvester Museum in Millville, PA, only a 20-minute drive north from The Inn, Farmhouse, and Brewing Co. at Turkey Hill. The Museum exhibits International Harvester’s agricultural, industrial, and military equipment, as well as other items from the mid-20th century. Many farmers, including those in Pennsylvania and surrounding states, relied on their International Harvester equipment, believing in the company’s motto: “If it ain’t red, leave it in the shed.” The museum lets visitors “Step back in time when the International Harvester Company was king of the farm equipment business worldwide.” As Liz Layton observed in [Lancaster Farming](https://www.lancasterfarming.com/farming-news/an-international-harvester-museum-in-the-works/article_4bfa627e-fce0-5c7a-8c76-e3e9511a35b9.html), “These places were a hub of the news in town. If it was raining, farmers came to the dealership not to buy a part, but to shoot the bull. It was an important part of the community in those days. The International Harvester Collectors Museum is on the way to Eagles Mere, where three more of the Passport attractions are located. ## History To increase brand identity shortly after World War II, the International Harvester Company created a prototype for a uniform building design and color. Frank Bartlow began construction of his prototype IH dealership building in Millville in 1946. Millville was one of the first towns to use this design. Today, the building is one of only a few of these structures still standing in the United States. Bartlow’s dealership sold only agricultural equipment and home appliances. The building’s sloping site required small changes to the prototype design. Most of the International Harvester iconography remained intact and is still visible on the museum’s façade today. The company specified a showroom front with large, multi-paned glass. A projecting tower displayed the IH logo and the dealer’s name. The roof and tower were painted red to match the company’s tractors. The façade used a lighter color that complemented the showroom. The state requires that you have an up-to-date and properly fitted PFD (personal flotation device) and a signaling whistle. Before you start, you want to plan your route. Check for weather and [water levels](https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/01538700/#parameterCode=00065&period=P7D), which may change the perceived difficulty of your trip. Plan your starting and ending point, and arrange a drop-off and pickup. Purchase a [River Water Trail Map and Guide](https://susquehannagreenway.org/product/susquehanna-river-water-trail-map-guide-north-branch/) or a [paddling brochure](https://itourcolumbiamontour.com/request-a-brochure/) from the Columbia Montour Visitors Bureau for planning purposes. ## What to Bring Make sure you dress appropriately (quick drying material, not cotton). Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water. Reservations are strongly recommended. ## North Branch Paddling Itineraries Now for the fun part, actually getting on the water! Here are several itineraries to try: ### PFBC Bloomsburg to Montgomery Park Danville [This route](https://susquehannagreenway.org/water-trails/pfbc-bloomsburg-to-danville-montgomery-park/) is a 12.5-mile one-way paddle. It should take 3-4 hours, depending on the river level. It is generally considered “easy,” as it is a quiet stretch of the river. At river mile 148.8, launch at the PFBC Bloomsburg boat ramp. You will pass multiple private islands and carved glacial cliffs resembling a human head, called “Indian Head Rock.” Watch for bald eagles, otters, beavers, and other waterfowl. You will see downtown Danville and end the trip at the Montgomery Park Municipal Access (River Mile 136.4). ### Berwick’s Test Track to PFBC Bloomsburg [This water trail](https://susquehannagreenway.org/water-trails/berwicks-test-track-park-to-pfbc-bloomsburg/) is considered an easy 10-mile paddle. It should take about 3-4 hours. Launch from the Berwick Test Track Park Access, River Mile 158.4. On the trip, you will see rolling mountains, a chain of islands, and interesting waterfowl. The trip finishes at the PFBC Bloomsburg Access at mile 148.8. Take some time and explore the town of Bloomsburg. ### Meshoppen to Tunkhannock Access [This 14-mile paddle](https://susquehannagreenway.org/water-trails/meshoppen-to-tunkhannock/) is long for beginners and does have a class 1 rapid area. Your launch is the Meshoppen Boat Launch, which is River Mile 232.7. The class 1 rapids are located at mile 228.3; navigate the river left. At mile 228, you will reach Vosburg Neck, a gorgeous region where you can expect to see bald eagles diving through the cliffs. Stop at the Howland Preserve at mile 223.3. There are the remains of an 18th-century cemetery, old stone walls, and what is left of the old North Branch Canal System. Exit at mile 218.5, the Tunkhannock Riverside Park Borough Access. ## Finishing Up the Day After a day kayaking on the Susquehanna River near Bloomsburg, PA, what’s next? In ancient cultures, people believed that the sun was being consumed by evil and that the world was ending. We have come to understand the science around eclipses, but it is still a spectacle and a once-in-a-lifetime event. ## What is a Solar Eclipse? A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth. The moon’s shadow either partially or fully blocks the sun’s light. Solar eclipses can only happen during the new moon phase when the moon is closest to the earth’s orbit. A total solar eclipse is only visible on Earth in a tiny path. Although these eclipses happen, on average, every 18 months, they repeat at the exact location only once every 360 to 410 years. ## When Will this Eclipse Happen? On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The next time a total solar eclipse will cross much of the United States is August 2045, and it does not pass the Eastern Seaboard. The April 2024 Eclipse will pass through Bloomsburg, PA, beginning at 2:06:55 pm. At 3:22:29 pm, the moon will cover the maximum amount of the sun. The BU Sculpture Walk leads you around the campus to see 18 pieces on display representing diverse themes, styles, techniques, and media. Almost all these sculptures were created during the last three decades of the 20th century by a dozen different sculptors. Artists created these works using wood, limestone, marble, and granite, as well as bronze, steel, and aluminum. You will see abstract forms, life size figures, and sculptures that can even function as benches along the way. Some of the works create auditory and tactile experiences, drawing you into the sculptures. Two two-dimensional works on the Sculpture Walk are incorporated for their artistic importance and accessibility. ***Truth and Virtue***, a large stained glass mural created by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1920 begins the Walk at the Andruss Library (visible above the entrance in the image below). You will see an abstract expressionist oil, *Untitled*, at the Haas Center for the Arts. Japanese Master Tetsuro Sawada created this painting in 1971. Today is the day that you’ve decided to take the family to Knoebels Amusement Resort. It’s only a short 25-minute drive from the Inn. When you arrive, everyone is amazed at how much is going on. The hardest thing to do is choosing what to do first. What an exciting afternoon it was, spent riding the awesome roller coasters and countless other rides, all the super fun games and attractions, and especially trying all the delicious treats.
