Hass Gallery January 2017 Exhibit: Last Car Running

Five photographs on wall of Christine Pearl exhibitChristine Pearl finds art in the culture of the Demolition Derby through her extensive collection of digital photographs, Last Car Running The Haas Gallery’s Winter Break Show at Bloomsburg University displays her work through February 1, 2017, with a closing reception from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm and an artist’s lecture at 1:15 pm on that date.

Washington City Paper’s review calls Last Car Running “. . . a project that is at once a worthy piece of social history and a visual feast.” Her photographs reflect her interactions with people as the inspiration for creating her images with their underlying sociocultural perspectives. In her statement on Hass Gallery’s Facebook page, she writes: “The defining elements of the demolition derby also mirror the dwindling blue-collar class evolving into a culture of facing the need to make do,” creating the new function of entertainment through destroying the old automobiles while dreaming of creating the indestructible car that is ‘Last Car Running’.

Pearl, based in Washington, DC, has a distinguished record of exhibits throughout the US and in Europe, as well as publications in many media formats. A disabled photographer, she works creatively with what she has, as do the ingenious participants in rural demolition derbies.
